LayBy for baby and nursery stores: a nine-month head start

Flexilay Team24 September 20264 min read

No other retail category comes with a built-in countdown. From the moment your customer finds out they're expecting, they have roughly nine months to get organised — and a list that includes some of the biggest single purchases a young household will make. A premium pram alone can run $1,500 to $3,500. Add a cot, a change table, a feeding chair and the rest of the nursery, and the total climbs fast.

Here's the problem for your store: the desire arrives early, but the budget arrives gradually. Parents-to-be start researching in the first trimester, fall in love with a particular pram, then hesitate at the checkout because paying for everything at once — right when they're bracing for reduced income and new expenses — feels reckless. So the cart sits there, and by the time they're ready, they may have found it cheaper somewhere else.

A category built for scheduled payments

LayBy fits baby and nursery retail so naturally because the timeline does the work for you. Your customer doesn't need the pram today. They need it locked in today and ready closer to the due date. That's exactly what a scheduled plan delivers: they choose the pram they actually want in week twelve, pay it off comfortably over the following months, and collect or receive it when the nursery is being set up.

For the customer, it turns a daunting lump sum into a series of manageable payments that track alongside their preparation. For you, it turns a browser into a committed buyer months before they'd otherwise have transacted. (If you've heard the same idea called layaway — the American term — it's the same concept; we've written up the difference at LayBy vs layaway.)

The commercial case

The upside for your store is concrete:

  • You win the high-ticket sale earlier. A deposit secures the exact pram, in the exact colour, before the customer keeps shopping around.
  • Average order value rises. When the per-payment number stays comfortable, parents add the bassinet attachment, the matching change table, the better mattress. Scheduled payments consistently lift what customers are willing to put in the cart.
  • Deposits improve cash flow. Money starts arriving the day the plan begins, not the day the goods leave.
  • No fraud or chargeback exposure on shipped goods. Nothing is released until the plan is fully paid, so you're never chasing a pram that's already out the door.

You commit stock against a deposit and a schedule — not against hope.

Why BNPL is the wrong tool for new parents

Buy Now Pay Later looks like a shortcut here, but it fits this category badly. The merchant fees sting most on exactly the high-ticket items nursery stores rely on. Credit assessments decline a meaningful slice of applicants at the worst possible moment. And there's a brand problem: your customers are actively trying to avoid new debt while preparing for a baby. Pushing a credit product at them — however it's dressed up — jars with the trust a baby brand depends on.

LayBy is the opposite posture. No credit checks, no debt, no interest — just a plan the customer sets up and pays down. That's a message expecting parents respond to, and it's why Flexilay isn't BNPL by design.

How Flexilay works in your store

Flexilay is payment scheduling, not lending. Customers choose their payment plans at checkout or via an invoice, payments run through your own payment provider (such as Stripe) so Flexilay never holds your funds, and you stay in complete control — goods are released only once the plan is complete. It connects to Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce for ecommerce, and to Xero, Odoo and QuickBooks if you quote or invoice larger nursery packages.

There's no lending licence to worry about and no change to how you get paid — just a new way for a very motivated customer to say yes months earlier.

Give your customers the head start

Your customers already have nine months of runway. LayBy simply gives them a way to use it — and gives you the sale at the start of it instead of the end. Sign up to start offering LayBy in your store, or take a few minutes to see how Flexilay works first.
