LayBy for camping and caravanning retailers: sell the trip months ahead

Flexilay Team10 September 20263 min read

Nobody buys a camper trailer the week they need it. The Easter trip gets planned in winter. The summer coast run gets mapped out in spring. Your customers spend months comparing rooftop tents, fridges, awnings and kayaks — and then stall at the checkout, because the cart total for a properly kitted-out trip runs well into four figures.

That customer isn't lost. They want the gear, they've done the research, and they have a hard date on the calendar. What they don't have is the lump sum today. LayBy is built for exactly this buyer.

The trip date is a built-in deadline

Most retail categories have to manufacture urgency. Camping and caravanning comes with it included: the departure date. A customer planning an April trip in September has seven months of runway — which is seven months of comfortable, scheduled payments.

That's what makes LayBy such a natural fit here. The customer locks in the rooftop tent or the camper trailer now, pays it down over the months they were always going to spend planning, and collects fully paid-up gear in time to pack the car. If the terminology is new to you, we've written a short explainer on LayBy versus layaway — same idea, different hemispheres.

Delayed delivery isn't a compromise — it's the point

In most ecommerce, holding goods until payment completes feels like friction. In this category it's genuinely irrelevant. Nobody needs the 65-litre fridge in November for a January trip. The gear only matters on departure day, and LayBy guarantees it's theirs — paid in full — well before then.

That flips the usual objection on its head. You're not asking customers to wait for something they need now. You're letting them secure something they need later, at a pace that suits the months in between.

The commercial case for your store

For the retailer, payment plans do three concrete things:

  • They recover stalled high-ticket sales. The customer who closes the tab on a $4,000 camper trailer often converts happily on the same trailer split across a schedule. That's revenue you were already attracting but not capturing — the same dynamic behind reducing cart abandonment without discounting.
  • They lift order values. When the question shifts from "can I afford the trailer?" to "what fits per fortnight?", the awning, the annexe and the second battery tend to join the cart. Flexible payment has a measurable effect on average order value.
  • They protect you completely. Goods don't ship until the plan is fully paid, so there's no fraud exposure and no chargeback risk on dispatched stock. You also take a deposit up front, which puts cash flow ahead of the season instead of behind it.

Why BNPL doesn't suit this category

Buy Now Pay Later looks like a shortcut, but it fits camping retail poorly. Merchant fees on a four-figure cart take a serious bite out of margin. Credit limits mean the exact customers you want — the ones building a big trip cart — are the most likely to be declined at the final step. And BNPL is still credit, which sits awkwardly next to a considered, family-oriented purchase. There's a fuller breakdown in the true cost of BNPL and what to offer instead.

LayBy is the opposite shape: no credit checks, no debt, no third party deciding who can buy from you.

How Flexilay works in your store

Flexilay is payment scheduling, not lending. Your customer chooses a plan at checkout, pays a deposit, and follows a schedule you control. Every payment runs through your own payment provider, such as Stripe — Flexilay never holds customer funds. You release the gear once the plan completes, on your terms.

It plugs into Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce checkouts, and works for invoiced sales too — useful if you quote larger caravan and camper setups through Xero or similar.

Ready before the season is

Your customers are already planning next season's trip. Give them a way to pay for it the same way they plan it: gradually, deliberately, and finished before departure day. Sign up to start offering LayBy, or take five minutes to see how Flexilay works first.
